Comme des Garcons founder and avant-garde legend Rei Kawakubo rarely grants interviews. And when she does, she tends to describe her approach as follows: “It’s always the same with each and every collection … it’s about designing something new; something that hasn’t been done before.” For more than four decades, Kawakubo has managed to find ever-new facets in the Comme de Garçons brand, supported by disciples like Junya Watanabe, Fumito Ganryu or Tao Kurihara. And ever since 1994, each of the label’s more than 40 published scents has also promised something truly special. The aromatic spectrum reaches all the way from the fragrance of clouds (White) to Odeur 53, said to comprise notes of cell tissue, nuclear meltdown and a metal flash.
